Some celebrity with scandal, few slangs, a vulgar scene (Shahid’s pissing!!), big controversy & Bingo! You have a formula for minting on any script.
With the Director of Ishqiya fame and the ruckus over the film’s release, Udta Punjab was definitely merchantable long before the D-day, expectations too soared high for obvious reasons, but the film badly falls prey to it’s crisp, otherwise dull script. There were dialogues and scenes that seemed totally undemanding of the script. Shahid’s pissing looked so very vulgar, I was reminded of Holy Smoke where it was Kate’s call, the scene was so convincing, I never felt anything wrong in it!! The ending was too frivolous to digest, not even in my wildest of dreams will I ever imagine walking through the sea shores and then jump in a swimming pool!!
Shahid Kapoor didn’t have to act he actually looked like a FUDDU, blame it on the Director. I kept wondering what made him think making eye balls big & wide would help his case of a drug addict, found Balli more convincing then Shahid!! Kareena Kapoor is just passable, a character like Preet Sahni should have had some more potency, but yes Alia Bhatt is commendable, she worked real hard to make the unnerving character so so very plausible & Diljit Dosanjh was adorable, his simplicity won my heart.
It is just for the strong message & some incredible sound tracks (my favourite being Allah-hu) I would give this film a 2.5 out of 5
